How to write the discussion chapter

How to write the discussion chapter of a thesis: structure, interpreting results against the literature, limitations, and common mistakes.

The discussion chapter is where your thesis stops reporting and starts arguing. The results chapter established what you found; the discussion has to establish what it means, why anyone should accept your interpretation over the alternatives, and what changes because of it. It is widely treated as the chapter that separates a competent thesis from a convincing one, and it is the chapter examiners probe hardest in the viva, because it is where your judgment is most exposed.

It is also the chapter students find hardest to start, because it has no data to organize and no procedure to describe. The blank page is real. This guide gives you a structure that works across disciplines, a method for interpreting results against the literature claim by claim, and the habits that make limitations and implications read as strength rather than apology.

What the discussion chapter is for

The discussion does four jobs. It answers the research questions explicitly, in sentences an examiner can quote back to you. It interprets the findings: mechanisms, explanations, meaning. It positions those findings against the existing literature, showing where you confirm, extend, or contradict what came before. And it bounds the claims with limitations, so the reader knows exactly how far to trust each conclusion and no further.

What it is not: a second results chapter. If a paragraph could be moved into the results chapter without anyone noticing, it is reporting, not discussing. The test throughout is inference: every paragraph of the discussion should require judgment that the numbers or themes alone do not supply. Where that judgment is missing, the chapter is idling.

A useful mental model: the results chapter is written for the reader who wants to check you, the discussion for the reader who wants to understand you. Both readers are your examiner on different afternoons. The chapter succeeds when the second reader finishes it able to summarize not just what you found, but why it matters and how confident to be in each part of it.

A discussion chapter structure that works

There is no single mandated structure, but this sequence works across most empirical theses and maps cleanly onto what examiners look for:

  • A brief restatement of the key findings: one or two paragraphs, in plain language, no statistics.
  • Interpretation organized by research question or by theme: what each finding means and why.
  • Comparison with prior literature: where your results agree, where they extend, where they conflict, and what explains the conflicts.
  • Unexpected results and alternative explanations, engaged honestly rather than buried.
  • Limitations, specific and tied to their effect on inference.
  • Implications for theory, practice, or policy, scoped to what the evidence supports.
  • A bridge to the conclusion, or the conclusion itself if your program combines the two.

Open with findings, not a summary of the thesis

Organizing the middle sections by research question is the safer default: it guarantees every question receives an explicit answer, and it hands the examiner a map they already hold. Whatever you choose for the middle, resist the standard weak opening. The weakest discussions begin with a page recapping the aims, the design, and the structure of the thesis. The examiner has just read all of that. Open instead with the findings themselves: 'Three findings stand out from the results.' Within two paragraphs, the reader should hold the core results in mind and be ready for the argument about them.

State the findings in words, not numbers. The results chapter carries the statistics; the discussion opens with what they amount to. This restatement also enforces a useful discipline: if you cannot state a finding in one plain sentence, you are not yet ready to discuss it, and the problem is upstream of the writing.

Answer each research question in a sentence you can defend

Somewhere in the discussion, each research question needs an explicit answer: not gestured at, stated. 'RQ1 asked whether X predicts Y; the results support a modest positive relationship, conditional on Z.' Examiners often prepare for the viva by hunting these sentences down, and a thesis that never quite answers its own questions invites the most uncomfortable opening question available.

Write the answer sentences first, before the rest of the chapter. They become the topic sentences your interpretation sections defend, and they expose immediately whether any question has quietly become unanswerable with the data you collected. That is much better discovered at the drafting stage than in the examination room.

Interpret results against the literature, claim by claim

The center of the discussion is a series of claims, each backed twice: by your data and by its relationship to prior work. For each main finding, say what it means, then place it: which studies it agrees with, which it complicates, and what might explain the differences in samples, measures, or context.

Do this claim by claim, not in one sweep. 'Our findings are broadly consistent with the literature' is unfalsifiable and earns nothing. 'This result supports one account of the mechanism but not in the population earlier studies sampled, which suggests the effect is conditional' is a contribution, because it is specific enough to be wrong.

This is where an evidence matrix pays off. Engaging a contradiction always reads better than being caught avoiding it.

Unexpected and null results deserve a real discussion

A null or contrary result handled well is one of the strongest signals in a thesis, because it shows you follow the evidence rather than the plan. Report it plainly in the results, then give it real space in the discussion: the possible explanations, which of them your design can and cannot rule out, and what the finding suggests about the theory that predicted otherwise.

Do not quietly demote an inconvenient result to a limitation, and do not torture it into significance with increasingly creative analyses. Examiners read both moves as exactly what they are. The honest version costs a paragraph of pride and buys credibility for every other claim in the chapter, which is a trade you should take every time.

Write limitations that read as competence

The limitations section is not a confession; it is an act of scholarly precision. You are telling the reader exactly how far your claims travel and where they stop. Each limitation should be specific, tied to its effect on inference, and, where possible, paired with the reason the finding still stands despite it.

Compare 'the sample size was small, which is a limitation' with 'the sample was drawn from a single institution, so the effect may not generalize to settings with different admission profiles; however, the pattern was consistent across cohorts within the sample.' The second names the mechanism, bounds the claim, and defends what remains. That is what competence looks like on the page.

Three or four real limitations beat eight generic ones. Padding the list with boilerplate about self-report measures or sample size, without connecting either to your specific inferences, reads as ritual rather than analysis, and examiners skim ritual.

Implications: say what changes because of your work

The implications section answers the question every examiner eventually asks: so what? Be concrete about who should act differently. Researchers: what should the next study do differently because yours exists? Practitioners: which decision or practice does this evidence inform? Policy: what question can now be answered with evidence that previously was not there? One well-argued implication per audience beats a scatter of vague ones.

Match the strength of each implication to the strength of the evidence behind it. A single-site qualitative study can legitimately reshape how a phenomenon is understood; it cannot mandate national policy. Overclaiming in the implications is one of the most reliable triggers of hostile viva questions, because it is the easiest weakness in the whole thesis to attack.

How long should the discussion chapter be?

Conventions vary by field, but the discussion is usually among the longer chapters, because interpretation takes more words than description. If your discussion runs much shorter than your results chapter, that is often a symptom worth investigating: findings are being reported rather than argued, or the comparison with the literature is thinner than the field expects.

The right length is the length of the argument: every research question answered, every main finding interpreted and positioned, limitations and implications given real treatment. Cut repetition ruthlessly, but do not starve the analysis to hit an imagined page count. If a section is not pulling argumentative weight, merge it; if an argument needs another page, give it the page. Examiners never complain that an argument was too well developed.

Common discussion chapter mistakes

When supervisors return discussion drafts, the same comments recur:

  • Repeating the results chapter with different sentence openers instead of interpreting.
  • Introducing new results that never appeared in the results chapter.
  • Citing foundational sources for the first time to patch an argument the literature review should have built.
  • Overclaiming: generalizing beyond the sample, the design, or the measures.
  • Generic limitations with no stated effect on inference.
  • Ignoring contradictory studies instead of engaging and explaining them.
