Turnitin’s API is licensed to institutions, not students. Most universities run it inside their own LMS. So Thesis Check doesn’t pretend to be the formal report: it catches what you can fix, produces the artifacts your institution asks for, and points you to the binding check, with the self-match trap made unmissable.
Submission and originality questions
What should I check before submitting my thesis?
Four things, in this order: that no passage is too similar to a published source, that every claim you make is grounded in a source that actually supports it, that every reference resolves to a real paper with no orphaned citations, and that you have the AI-use disclosure your institution now probably asks for. Then download the compiled file and run your institution's own check.
Is this the same as Turnitin?
No, and it would be dishonest to imply it. Turnitin's power is its proprietary database and its global repository of student papers, which CiteDash does not replicate. This is a pre-check against the scholarly corpus: it gets you clean before the binding check at your institution, rather than replacing it.
Will running a check here count as prior publication?
No. CiteDash never submits your text to a student-paper repository. This matters more than it sounds: uploading your own draft to a third-party checker that does store submissions can make your final thesis match itself at a high percentage, and untangling that with your institution is painful. Only submit to a checker that does not retain your work.
What similarity score is acceptable?
There is no universal threshold, and anyone quoting one is guessing. Institutions and disciplines differ, and a high score driven by correctly quoted and cited material is not the same problem as a low score hiding one unattributed paragraph. Use the report to find and fix specific passages, and take the number from your own institution.
Can I generate an AI-use disclosure statement?
Yes, exportable as PDF or DOCX. It is generated from your project's real audit trail rather than written from scratch, so it describes what actually happened in your work: which steps used AI assistance and how the output was verified.
