Front matter is the part of the thesis nobody plans and everybody sees. Examiners meet your title page, abstract, and declarations before a single sentence of your argument, and graduate-school administrators check them against regulations with a literalism that surprises most candidates. Yet these pages are almost always written last, in the exhausted week before submission.
The result is predictable: the strongest chapter in the thesis sits behind an abstract drafted at midnight and a table of contents whose page numbers stopped being true two compiles ago. None of this affects the quality of your research. All of it affects how carefully people assume the rest was done.
This guide works through the front matter in order: what goes in it, what each piece is for, and how to produce the mechanical parts automatically, so that the only things you actually write are the abstract and the thanks.
What goes in thesis front matter, and in what order
Institutions vary, so your regulations override any list, including this one. But the common order runs:
- Title page, laid out exactly to the institutional template.
- Declaration of originality, plus any word-count or AI-use statements your institution requires.
- Abstract, within the stated word limit.
- Acknowledgements (in some traditions these precede the abstract; check yours).
- Table of contents.
- List of figures and list of tables.
- List of abbreviations, glossary, or nomenclature where the field expects one.
- Optionally, a dedication and a note on publications arising from the thesis.
The thesis title page: copy the template, not another thesis
Two principles govern all of it. First, the regulations win every argument, including arguments with beautiful theses from other universities. Second, everything that can be generated should be generated: contents pages, lists of figures, and page numbers must come from the document itself, never from your keyboard.
The title page itself is pure compliance: the degree name written the required way, the month and year of submission, the exact required phrasing of the 'submitted in partial fulfilment' formula, your name as registered, and the institution's naming conventions for schools and departments.
Do not model it on a thesis you admire, because that thesis followed different regulations, or older ones. Download the current template or specimen page from your graduate school and reproduce it field by field. If your registered name and the name you publish under differ, resolve which one the regulations require now, not during corrections. And while you are in the regulations, note the physical requirements that travel with the title page: margins, font sizes, and line spacing usually live in the same section.
Treat the specimen page as a checklist, not an inspiration. Set each required element, compile, and compare the output against the template side by side at full size. Title pages fail on details: a missing comma in the degree title, the wrong month, an outdated school name after a departmental merger.
How to write a thesis abstract that stands alone
The abstract is the most-read page you will ever write. Examiners read it first, and many future readers will read nothing else, since it is what repositories and databases index. It must stand completely alone: no citations, no undefined abbreviations, and no promises the thesis does not keep.
Write it as prose, not as a list of section labels. Examiners notice abstracts assembled by filling in a template, and the word limit is too precious to spend on scaffolding phrases like 'this thesis is structured as follows'. Every sentence should carry content.
Structure it in five moves, compressed to fit your word limit:
- Context: the problem and why it matters, in one or two sentences.
- Gap: what was unknown or unresolved before your work.
- Method: what you did, at the level of design rather than procedure.
- Findings: the actual results, stated concretely, never 'results are discussed'.
- Contribution: what the field can now do or claim that it could not before.
Declarations: originality, word count, and AI use
Write the abstract after the conclusion chapter is finished, because the abstract is the conclusion at maximum compression. Then check the word limit, which is a hard regulation in most institutions, and ask someone outside your subfield to read it for self-sufficiency.
One more abstract habit pays off later: choose the handful of terms you want the thesis to be found under, and make sure they appear naturally in it, since repositories and search engines index this page above all others. That is not keyword stuffing; it is making sure the reader searching for your exact topic actually meets your work.
The declaration of originality is a formal instrument, not a formality. It is the page on which you claim the work as your own and disclose what is not: joint work, previously published material, and content that appeared in your own earlier degrees all typically need naming. Use your institution's exact wording.
Many institutions now require a statement of AI use alongside the traditional declaration. Write it factually: which tools, for what tasks, under what oversight. Thesis acknowledgements: tone, order, and pitfalls
Acknowledgements are the one page where you are allowed a human voice, which is exactly why they go wrong. Length and tone vary by discipline and culture, so skim two or three recent theses from your own department to calibrate. What does not vary: sincerity beats performance, specific thanks beat generic ones, and nobody has ever been criticised for an acknowledgements page that was slightly too short.
The reliable structure moves from the formal to the personal:
- Funders and scholarships, often with required grant-number wording from the funder.
- Supervisors and the advisory committee.
- Participants, patients, archives, or communities who made the data possible.
- Technical and administrative staff, plus labmates and colleagues who contributed concretely.
- Friends and family last, where the register can warm up.
Contents, figures, and abbreviations: generate, never type
Keep the acknowledgements to a page. Check any required funder wording, since some grants mandate exact acknowledgement text. Avoid settling scores, in-jokes that will age badly, and thanking anyone who would be surprised to find themselves there. Remember that the audience includes your examiners, who read this page minutes before meeting you.
The mechanical lists are a different discipline entirely. A typed table of contents is a defect factory: every late edit shifts page numbers, and a contents page that disagrees with the document is one of the first things a format check catches. The same applies to lists of figures and tables. Generate all three from the document structure, so headings produce the contents and captions produce the lists. This is one more reason to keep heading levels disciplined throughout the thesis, because a generator can only reflect the structure you actually built.
For abbreviations, keep a running list from day one rather than reconstructing it at the end by searching the PDF. Define each term at first use in the text anyway; the list is a courtesy, not a substitute.
While you are generating, sweep the captions. The list of figures reprints each caption's opening, so captions written as long paragraphs produce an unreadable list. Give every figure and table a short, self-contained title sentence, let the explanatory detail follow in the caption body, and both the list and the reader benefit.
Dedications and notes on publications
The optional pages deserve a moment each. A dedication, if you want one, is a single line on its own page, and it is the one place in the thesis where no regulation cares what you write. A note on publications matters more: if chapters draw on your published papers, many institutions require a page listing the publications and stating how they map to chapters, sometimes with each co-author's contribution spelled out.
Check the rules for this page early if you are writing a thesis by publication or a hybrid, because it interacts with the declaration and, in some programs, with copyright permissions from publishers. Page numbering: roman numerals, and where page 1 begins
The near-universal convention: front matter takes lowercase roman numerals, the main text restarts at arabic 1 on the first page of the first chapter, and the title page counts as page i but displays no number. Your regulations will state their own version; follow it exactly.
This is a compile setting, not a manual operation. Set the numbering break once in your document system and let every regeneration honour it. Manual page numbers are how a reordered chapter turns into an afternoon of renumbering, and how a contents page ends up lying about where chapter four starts.
Two edge cases catch people. Landscape pages must often keep their page number in the portrait position, which is a template setting worth finding before submission week. And appendices usually continue the arabic sequence rather than restarting, however tempting a fresh count looks; the contents page treats them as chapters of the same book.
Compile the front matter, then check it like an examiner
Front matter is where hand-assembly goes to die, which is why it is best produced by the same compile that builds the rest of the document.
