AI-use Disclosure

An AI-use disclosure is a formal statement describing whether and how artificial intelligence tools contributed to a piece of academic work, for example in drafting text, editing, coding, data analysis, or literature searching. Requirements vary widely: some institutions and journals prohibit certain uses, others permit them with disclosure, and most agree that AI systems cannot be credited as authors and that the human author remains fully responsible for accuracy and originality.

For a thesis, find your university's current policy before you rely on any AI tool, and keep a running log of what you used and for which tasks. A precise disclosure, often placed in the front matter or methodology, protects you: undeclared use discovered later can be treated as an integrity breach, while honest disclosure of permitted assistance is routine. When in doubt, ask your supervisor in writing.
