Dependent Variable

The dependent variable is the effect or outcome of interest, the thing a study measures rather than manipulates. Its values are expected to depend on the independent variable: exam performance depending on study method, for example. Choosing a dependent variable also means choosing an instrument and a scale to measure it, which in turn shapes the analysis options available.

For a thesis, the dependent variable must connect directly to the research question, since it is the evidence on which conclusions rest. Describe exactly how it is measured, on what scale, and with what reliability, so that results are interpretable. Vague outcomes such as success or engagement need explicit operationalization before an examiner will accept the findings built on them.
