Front Matter
The preliminary pages of a thesis before the first chapter, such as the title page, abstract, acknowledgments, and tables of contents.
Front matter is everything that precedes the first chapter of a thesis: the title page, any required declaration or copyright page, the abstract, acknowledgments, table of contents, lists of tables and figures, and sometimes a list of abbreviations or a dedication. Institutions prescribe both the required items and their order.
Front matter is conventionally paginated with lowercase Roman numerals, with Arabic numbering starting at the first chapter. The title page is usually counted but not numbered.
For thesis writers, front matter is best generated, not typed. Automatic tables of contents, lists of figures, and cross-references stay correct as chapters shift during revision, while hand-built ones quietly fall out of date. Because the abstract and title page are what examiners and future readers see first, checking the front matter against the institutional checklist is a standard part of final submission.
