A supervisor meeting is a recurring, usually scheduled, discussion between a research student and their academic supervisor. Typical business includes reviewing drafts, troubleshooting methods, checking progress against the timeline, and agreeing on concrete next steps. Frequency varies by program and stage, from weekly during data collection to less often during long writing periods.

Effective meetings are prepared: an agenda sent in advance, specific questions rather than general updates, and work submitted early enough to be read before the meeting.

For thesis writers, the habit that matters most is keeping a written record. Brief notes of decisions and agreed actions, shared with the supervisor afterward, prevent misremembered advice, document that feedback was addressed, and help if expectations are later disputed.
