Thematic analysis is a widely used method for identifying, analyzing, and reporting patterns of meaning, called themes, across a qualitative data set. The researcher typically becomes familiar with the data, generates initial codes, groups those codes into candidate themes, reviews the themes against the full data set, and then defines and names them. It is flexible: it can be applied inductively or guided by existing theory, and it works with interviews, focus groups, open-ended survey responses, and documents.
For a thesis, thematic analysis offers an accessible and defensible route through qualitative data, but examiners expect more than a list of topics. Report how themes were developed, illustrate each with well-chosen extracts, and explain how the themes answer your research question rather than simply summarizing what participants said.
